SEND Consultations – Strategy & Funding and SEND Transport Policy

Description

A public consultation is now underway on proposed changes to special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) provision in Darlington. Cabinet agreed to go out to consultation at a meeting last week. The proposals aim to promote inclusion and improve outcomes for children and young people with SEND. The consultation will run from 17 October to 28 November 2018.

The proposals outline six key objectives to ensure children and young people with SEND achieve the best possible outcomes. These are:

  • Early identification of need – ensuring that the right children and young people with SEND are in the right placement with the right support.
  • Building capacity in mainstream and specialist settings to reduce reliance on specialist out of area placements.
  • Ensuring children and young people with SEND are educated in their local community and have effective preparation for adulthood and access to work and leisure opportunities.
  • Increasing achievement and improving outcomes for children and young people with SEND.
  • Effective collaboration, ensuring the active involvement of SEND children and their families.
  • Achieving ‘best value’ from all services.

The draft SEND strategy is aimed at making the system as fair and equitable as possible, with funding closely linked to the needs of individuals.
